Reviving the Eyes: Lower Eyelid Surgery Techniques
If you are dissatisfied with your appearance due to premature signs of aging under your eyes, such as dark undereye circles or sagging skin, then you may want to consider lower eyelid surgery. Lower eyelid surgery, clinically known as lower blepharoplasty, is a minimally invasive plastic surgery procedure that can restore a more youthful look to the undereye region, potentially taking years off of the patient’s facial appearance. Dr. Lloyd Van Wyck performs lower eyelid surgery using several techniques. As an experienced plastic surgeon with a finely honed aesthetic eye, he has an uncanny talent for choosing the technique that will produce the most natural-looking yet cosmetically appealing results for each individual patient.
If you are interested in rejuvenating your undereye area, Dr. Van Wyck would be happy to discuss the various lower eyelid surgery techniques available to you at his Ottawa, ON plastic surgery practice. Techniques Used to Perform Lower Eyelid Surgery
There are multiple techniques that Dr. Van Wyck can use to perform lower eyelid surgery. Based on your unique needs and goals, he will recommend the technique that is most likely to produce the results you desire.
Traditional Lower Eyelid Surgery Technique
The traditional lower eyelid surgery technique remains the most commonly used technique as it is best suited to the needs of the majority of patients who want to rejuvenate the skin under their eyes. Using this technique, Dr. Van Wyck places an incision directly beneath the eyelashes in the lower eyelid skin. He then lifts the skin to expose the underlying fad pads. He carefully and strategically removes just enough fat to flatten the bulging lower lid without causing it to appear hollowed out. Finally, he removes a small strip of skin and pulls the remaining skin taut, suturing the incision closed.
The “Pinch” Lower Eyelid Surgery Technique
For patients who want to achieve very subtle rejuvenation of the lower eyelids, the “pinch” technique may suffice. Using this technique, Dr. Van Wyck makes an incision inside the lower eyelid, through which he removes just a small amount of fat. He then removes literally a tiny “pinch” of excess skin from the lower eyelid. This technique is not well suited for patients with more pronounced signs of aging in the lower eyelids.
The Transconjunctival Lower Eyelid Surgery Technique
Unlike the traditional and “pinch” techniques, the transconjunctival lower eyelid surgery technique does not involve the removal or tightening of the skin under the eyes. Rather, Dr. Van Wyck simply removes part of the fat pads through an incision made inside of the lower eyelid. This technique is ideal for patients with bulging lower eyelids but no sagging or wrinkling.
Canthopexy
For patients with severe drooping of the lower eyelids due to lax musculature, canthopexy may represent the best option. Using this technique, Dr. Van Wyck uses stitches to attach the muscles of the lower eyelid to the underlying bone in order to lift the eyelid to a higher position.
