All About the Areolar Breast Augmentation Incision Technique
If you are currently considering breast augmentation, you probably have many questions about the procedure. Perhaps more so than any other plastic surgery procedure, breast augmentation offers patients a wealth of options. While this can truly be a wonderful thing, it can also be a source of great confusion and even frustration. This is why Dr. Lloyd Van Wyck and his friendly, knowledgeable team of plastic surgery professionals are always happy to provide their patients with expert guidance through every stage of their experience, from their initial consultation through to their aftercare.
As you might imagine, you have control over such elements as the size, shape, and filling material of your breast implants. However, you may be surprised to learn that you also have say over the incision technique used during the surgical placement of those implants. This is where the guidance of Dr. Van Wyck and his team will certainly come in handy.
One of the most popular of these techniques is the areolar breast augmentation incision technique. At our Ottawa, ON plastic surgery practice, not all patients are equally well-suited to this technique; however, those who are find it to offer a multitude of benefits.
Is the areolar breast augmentation incision the best technique in your case? To find out, we invite you to schedule your initial consultation with Dr. Van Wyck today.
What Is the Areolar Breast Augmentation Incision Technique?
The areola is the dark circle of skin that surrounds the nipple. The areolar incision technique involves making an incision along the lower edge of the areola during the breast augmentation procedure. Dr. Van Wyck places the breast implant through this incision, the location of which offers him outstanding control due to its proximity to the breast. Indeed, this is one of the primary benefits of the areolar incision.
Another benefit of the areolar incision technique is that the resulting scar tends to blend in relatively inconspicuously with the border of the areola. This is particularly true of patients with darker areolar skin. The scar itself is generally visible only upon close inspection.
A third benefit is offered to patients who wish to combine breast augmentation with breast lift. The areolar incision technique allows Dr. Van Wyck to perform both procedures through a single incision.
It should be noted that patients who want to have larger silicone-gel-filled breast implants placed during their breast augmentation surgeries may not be good candidates for this incision technique. Patients who opt for this technique should also be aware of potential risks associated with the technique, including the risk of scar thickening, which could result in the scar becoming more visible over time. Patients who are concerned with visible scarring may wish to consider the transaxillary, or underarm, incision technique as an alternative.
